Ett av de mest traditionella reklamtricken består i att underblåsa fiendskap mellan två varumärken för att så tvinga människor välja sida. Apple eller Microsoft? Pepsi eller Coca-Cola? Nike eller Adidas? Barcelona eller Madrid?

Särskilt bland män i de attraktiva målgrupperna 15-35 är önskan att knyta an till ett varumärke genom ta avstånd från dess "fiender" stark. Ta en runda på Södermalm och lyssna på föraktet mot Aporna på Djurgården, golfidioterna i Lindeberg eller vemsomhelst som röker fel cigg.

Förresten behöver ni inte ta er till Södermalm. Titta in på valfritt dagis. Lyssna på ungarnas strid mellan Barcelona och Madrid. (Jo, varumärkesbyggarna letar sig allt längre ner i åldrarna)

Det är lätt att psykologisera med teorier om osäkra män som lättare knyter an genom hat till andra än kärlek till de egna. Eller oidipuskomplex eller den intellektuella kortslutning som uppstår när vuxna män medvetet väljer att enbart se den ENA sidan av något. ALLT Apple gör är bra. ALLT Hammarby gör är vackert.

Egentligen kanske det hela skulle kunna betraktas som rörande. Önskan efter val som betyder något i en värld där alltmer handlar om vilka gymnastikskor vi köper. Längtan efter det okomplicerade brölet med andra män på en hammarbymatch.

Men det finns faktiskt fortfarande ställen där val betyder något. Politik till exempel. Vad händer då när en generation som av marknadsförare lärt sig att att se på världen som ett val mellan två fotbollslag ger sig in i utrikespolitiken?

I Dagens SVD argumenterar Adam Cwejman mot kritik av USA. Han börjar med att säga att han själv an gång ansåg att "allt ont härstammade från USA" men att han nu bytt sida. Numera anser Adam att "En världsordning där USA inte dominerar är ingen lockande utsikt."

Märker ni hur Adam skriver som om det handlar om fotbollslag eller läskedrycker. Man måste välja. Förut var han MOT, nu är han FÖR. Precis som när man byter fotbollslag. Varje invändning från "vänstern" om omoraliska jordbrukstullar, stöd till militärjuntor eller skendränkningar bemöts med samma "Vaddå, vill ni hellre ha Kina?"

Säga vad man vill om nuvarande utrikesministern, men han är i alla fall inte typen som definierar sin identitet genom fotbollslag eller ölsorter. Visst kan det ibland vara svårt att veta var man har Bildt (utom möjligen där det doftar cash) men det är i så fall för att han avväger varje fråga utifrån olika perspektiv. Fan vet om han ens anser att världen behöver någon som "Dominerar" den.

Adam däremot kommer ALLA att ALLTID veta EXAKT var de har. Han är på USA:s sida. Han är på Israels sida. Vad dessa fadersfigurer sen tar sig för spelar mindre roll. Terrorbombningar med kemiska medel i Vietnam? Stöd till den Saudiska kungafamiljens tortyrkammare? Vaddå, vill vi hellre ha POL POT vid rodret?

We just started working on a new project in order to mobilize the Austrian youth. It's the Junge Industrie that's asked us to create a campaign of a completely new kind for the Austrian market.
In advertising it's often said that the real achievment is to convince the client. This is of course based upon the assumption that admen are brighter than clients and this I doubt. Never the less it fills you with joy when you once in a while starts working with people that instinctly understands the importance of debate and riot. We are happy to say we once more found this understanding in Austria.

En gång var salonen full av kvinnor som turades om att att sitta nakna på en kopieringsmaskin, en annan gång full med dansande barockkostymer. Erich är alltid i mitten. Idag också, han sitter och röker när jag kommer, gör sig ingen brådska. På en gammal TV dansar Michael Jackson i någon inspelad konsert, Erich försöker höja volymen men det blir inte högre, bara burkigare. Han höjer så mycket det går och lämnar sen TVn och rummet för att leta upp något. Tjejerna som sitter och pratar och röker i soffan slutar prata och röker vidare i tysthet, ingen kan prata, eller prata går men ingen hör något. TÄnker att det var länge sedan jag lyssnade på en TV som spelade på max. In dansar Erich, jonglerar med en trimmer och lugnar mig, han är den bästa frisören i Wien. Det kommer att bli bra.

Erich var bästa kompis med Falco, har var Falcos frisör. Falco finns överallt i salongen, bara ett litet hål i mitten av spegeln går at spegla sig i, resten är bilder på Erich och Falco, Erich och Falcos andra kompisar, en tjej som visar rumpan. Påven. Autografer. Men mest Falco. Jag ser bara min haka i hålet.
Erich kollar inte heller i spegeln, han kollar på tjejerna i soffan.

Andra gången hjälpte vi Gudrun att elda upp våra pengar.

Nu är det tredje gången gillt. Vi kommer att ordna två mingel. Det kommer att bli en tid av excesser och gränsdragningsproblematik som kommer att chocka de flesta sunda människor.

Sorry for our absence. Last months have been hysterical. Traveling the globe meeting celebrities, trying to cure anxiety with megalomania and megalomania with anxiety.

Now, let us tell you a little more of what we've been up to:
The client was the central european sports retailer Hervis. They wanted to find a way to be more talked about, while retaining their crazy image.

Studio Total came up with a new sport, "Pillow Fighting". We invited austrians, swedes, japanese and americans to meet in a International championship in New York.

The media coverage was huge. Hundreds of newspaper articles, Thousands of blogs. Radio and live TV broadcasted from the event. WE where kings of the world.

Risk Analysis are for sociopaths

After burning 100 000 of our money, media asked us if we had done a "risk analysis".

From the beginning "risk analysis" a methodology to evaluate risks associated with complex engineering enteties like airliners or nuclear power plants. It was a theory that saved many lives.

Then the term was borrowed by PR-consultants. They launched it as a service to their customers. Before any advertising campaign (or action) was to be taken they could sell the client a "risk analysis".

One problem with this is that it is risk when it comes to PR is more complicated than Nuclear power plants. Some examples:

* When EMI where about to launch the Sex Pistols album there was a risk that their traditional audience would be angry.

* When Cheap monday choose to integrate an upside-down cross in their logo, there was a risque people would take offense.
* When Jesus started his sermons there was many risks. Like angering the romans and jews at the same time.

In all these cases, the risks came true. Christians all over the world took offense over the cross. The Romans where really pissed at Jesus and the people of britain rose up against the filthy rock-band.

It is, however not the same as to argue that Cheap Monday, Sex Pistols and Jesus should've been more been successful if they had softened their expressions.

Actually- quite to the contrary, when it comes to PR the perceived risks is not a necessary evil- it is a necessary good.

Does that mean that you should do whatever to get attention?

If we where to say that it is easier to break a window with a stone than a feather, does that mean you immediately have to run out breaking windows?

Är H&M framgångsrika?

För ett tag sen klagade Chefen för H&M över hur orättvist stor uppmärksamhet en massa "pyttesmå" svenska klädmärken fick i media. "Vår butik i Jönköping" sa han "omsätter mer än halva det svenska modeundret"

Det är säkert sant. Men orättvist?

H&M tjänar sina pengar på att kopiera andras designer och sy upp dem i fattiga länder. Det är en komplicerad verksamhet logistiskt, industriellt och moraliskt. Däremot har H&M såvitt jag vet aldrig haft några andra ambitioner än att tjäna så mycket pengar som bara är möjligt.

1991 skrev Kurt Cobain några sånger. Sen tog han livet av sig. Därefter har Universal tjänat kanske 500 miljoner kronor på att trycka upp de låtarna på plastskivor och sälja runt världen. Betyder det att media är ORÄTTVISA när de inte uppmärksammar cheferna på Universal lika mycket som Kurt?

Kära H&M chef: det är ganska osexigt att komma och böla för att media inte skriver om dig. Men du har ju pengar, och plats i media är ju till salu. Med kärlek är det, som ordspråket säger, lite komplicerat.

Jag har svår ADHD. Glömmer regelbundet vad våra viktigaste kunder heter i förnamn. Missar hälften av alla tider och många viktiga möten, t.ex. senast när marknadschefen för Red Bull flugit till Stockholm för att träffa oss. Ibland går det dagar när jag inte kan slita mig från KB och en bok om drakar i nordfransk medeltidsmytologi.

Detta skulle vara ganska jobbiga egenskaper hos en anställd. Hos mig som chef är de direkt förödande.

That was the theme of a massive advertising campaign in the nineties from SKANSKA. They bought media for millions of dollars. Do anyone remember the campaign?

Now imagine if they had used all that money actually building a house drawn by a kid. It would be perhaps the most famous building in sweden. It would still stand today, and for a looooong time.

Imagine if Studio Total had just made an Ad with a mock-up of the Wall of Sound. Do you think we'd still gotten 1,5 million views on Google?

Imagine if Selma Lagerlöf had said: "someone ought to write a novel about a mad pries convincing peasants to travel to Jerusalem".

Yes we believe most advertising agencies seriously damages business. Like taking painkillers when your leg is broken (Brindfors, the best painkiller, killed SAAB)

But there are exceptions.

If your audience is young. SNASK is perhaps the only Swedish agency understanding irony. Still waiting for their big breakthrough.

School of getting famous # 008: "Recycle"

This summer Studio Total burned 100 000 swedish kronor in order to show injustices in wages between men and women. A lot of people in the advertising industry have complained that our campaign wasn't "original".
Like we ever said it was.
In fact destroying money (and getting attention for it) is as old as money. The early christians did it to show their contempt for materialistic ways of the Roman patricians (actually it was coins thrown into a fire). Italian surrealists did it. Russian anarchists.
(There is a beautiful anecdote from fin de siècle Paris where a famously cheap Baron drops a golden coin on the floor. He goes down on all four to search for it. Another nobleman puts fire to a banknote, worth ten times the amount of the coin. He holds out the burning note to help the Baron search)
And the KLF did it.

All of these times the bonfires have gotten a lot of attention. And none have been original. In fact (by definition) only one person can be truly original, and that is the first person in the world to put fire to a banknote. Ironically, as much attention as that might have gotten him in the day he is today totally forgotten.

So what do we learn from this? We learn that 99,999% of the time, recycling an idea is better that coming up with a new one. Because our aim is NOT to be original but to get attention. (What perhaps is original is burning money or starting a political party as MARKETING but that is another discussion)

Now, to show you another example, let's move on to something more recent. A week ago Studio Total helped amelia with a campaign in wich they put in an ad for a "beach tester".
The ad was featured in blogs, TV, radio and newspapers all over the world. Just in Sweden the media value would be calculated in millions of dollars. Now where did we get the idea?

* Well, in 2006 Studio Total helped Canal+ put in an job-ad for Zombiehunters. The Ad spread across the world and millions and millions of people heard of it. The CEO for Canal+ called it the best value for money advertising ever.

* In 2009 we put in another ad for "Festivalbesökare". It was featured in all the biggest swedish magazines as well as in countless blogs. During the time, arvikafestivalen sold a record amount of tickets. The same year, an australian agency got even more attention offering "the best job in the world".

So, was our new ad "original". Hell no. However, it IS sort of ironic that most of the criticism comes from people whose alternative to our non-original marketing consists of the truly original art of buying advertising space in TV4.

An interesting concept is commercials that leaks and no one takes credit for.
The client: "Someone at the agency must have uploaded it on Youtube" but we DON'T know nothing about it. In the previous meeting with the agency, the client: And you can assure us that no one will be able to trace it back to us? And you will take full responsibility if it backfires? The agency: Yeah, don't worry 'bout that. And is it ok if we email the invoice as a PDF?

Top Spin 4 commercial got some extra attention by showing a slow motion dancing Serena in front of fire. Accidently success for a commercial on Youtube?

1.8 million hits on Google and we predict this title will be a success.

Sex, Tomas, Naked, Scandal

Spent the morning eying through the statistics on our little blog. We like to believe we have some educated readers (82% uses a Mac 4 instance wich @ least makes u firmly middle class).Therefore I was surprised to find how any mention of sex, drinking, scandals, celebrities or nudity immediately seemed to steal all attention.

And since Google Analytics is a powerful tool I could even c the difference in numbers. In short:"sex" in a heading gets almost four times as many clicks as the average post. "Scandal" double the amount. When something personal is written about any of us, like "Tomas in an airplane", that post also gets triple the amount of clicks. Lesson? We've spent days formulating complicated principles of communication yet all you care about is nudity?

Ok, let's try it.

Do you want a post with a members of Studio Total being part of a scandal involving sex, drinkin' and celebrities?

Zippo is about to launch new products sice their sales has droped from 18 to 12 million lighters annually due to fewer smokers. This will be very interesting to follow.

They have got the basics right, “A brand is just a story attached to a product. Like any narrative, it carries sensation. Zippo’s story is ‘manly independence,” but when it comes to the products they are concidering they just blend in, travel bags, backpacks, watches, sunglasses, jeans and leisure shirts, wallets, pens, liquor flasks, outdoor hand warmers, playing cards and even a fragrance.

Insn't there any other product that can become the new Zippo?

Kultur ökar tillväxten!

Ofta antyds det bara i en bisats, men det har varit den bärande punkten i global kulturdebatt i flera år. Idén att ett rikt kulturliv gynnar ekonomisk tillväxt.

Alla som varit på ett riksteaterseminarium vet vad jag talar om. Teaterkonsulter som genom avancerad statistik bevisar hur kultur varit en central faktor i skapandet av tillväxtregioner som Barcelona och San Francisco.
Förra månaden lyssnade jag på ett långt och välformulerat anförande av en kulturkonsulent från Malmö som visade hur kulturinsatser på Pågens bagerier ledde till ett kraftigt ökat engagemang hos de anställda när det gällde effektiviseringar i produktionen.

Liknande argument har anförts när det gäller synen på homosexuella. En liberal syn på homosexuella skapar tillväxt. Även här har San Francisco och Barcelona lyfts fram som exempel. Det finns liknande argument för att jämställdhet mellan könen, yttrandefrihet och anti-rasism också stimulerar tillväxt.

Det är lätt att fängslas av denna retorik. Tillväxt är bra. Låt oss använda de medel vi har för att öka den. Men låt oss då titta lite på de senaste årens verkliga tillväxtraket enligt IMF: Singapore. På mindre än två sekel har detta land gått från relativt fattigt till att bli ett av världens tre rikaste, slagit endast av skatteparadisen Luxenburg och Quatar. I Singapore läggs inte många spänn på kultur (förutom ett skrytbygge för västerlänsk finkultur i hamnen). Kvinnor förtrycks, homosexuella åker i fängelse, och nån yttrandefrihet finns överhuvudtaget inte. (I Quatar är det ännu värre med kultur och homosexuellas rättigheter och när hörde du sist talas om kultur från Luxenburg?). Är detta då goda argument MOT kultur, homosexualitet och jämställdhet mellan könen?

Nä. För oavsett vad riksteater-konsulternas statistik säger är kultur något mycket större än ett redskap för att öka effektiviteten hos Pågens degblandare. Man behandlar inte homosexuella som människor för att det ökar tillväxten.

Om den du älskar eller det du läser sen får dig att ge upp allt, flytta till skogs och leva av att odla ekologisk rabarber så är det inte en mindre kärlek eller sämre bok.
(Inte ens om hela jävla globala finansmarknaderna skulle haverera på kuppen)

People say society is full of sex. Eh. I've been to 753 dinnerparties and 256 meetings and not ONCE did different positions for oral sex come up (except when I mentioned it). There are no pictures of people fucking on billboards, or blowjobs on morning TV.

In reality modern society is among the least sexually open civilization that has existed. What our world is full of is titillation, and that is a completely different thing. Just try to mention sex on a meeting, in advertising or at a dinnerparty and people will frown.

But they will also want to fuck u.
And that is why sex in marketing still is one of the best ways to make people want your product.

Now- there are people that claim it is immoral to "use" sex to sell things. Those people are your best friends. By attacking your ads they draw attention to you. As to the argument that "sex can reinforce stereotypes". Sure, but that is like saying "words can reinforce stereotypes". If you don't wanna reinforce stereotypes- don't reinforce stereotypes.

Lesson: The people that hate you the most also want you the most.

Most companies spend their days thinking of how NOT to upset people when what they really should be thinking of is trying to find ways of getting people to hate them.

Apple, Coca-Cola, Barack Obama, Lady Gaga and Genghis Khan have in common not only that they have been loved, but even more that they have been hated.

Now I'm not saying you should necessarily follow in Genghis footsteps. But the reason for not indiscriminately killing 40% of the inhabitants in central Asia is not that it would pass by unnoticed.

And remember. The light side of the force is as strong as the dark side, but offers WAY better food.

Många verkar ha roligt åt att jag råkar gilla kavring. "Ha ha, han heter Cavling och gillar Kavring". Nå, alla har olika humor. Jag själv och mina vänner (t.ex. Mikael Storåkers) uppskattar intelligent brittisk humor för "högre pannor". Men ok, det betyder inte att jag ser ner på dem med enklare humor- var och en sin egen lyckas smed!

När det gäller min lust till kavring är det dock faktiskt inte roligt utan bara dumt. Tänk er att en man som heter "Peter Limpa" som gillar att äta limpa. Roligt? Eh, nej. Kanske 80% av svenska folket gillar att äta limpa.

Visst, det är färre som äter Kavring än Limpa, men det är bara statistik, och statistik är knappast roligt. Alltså: Jag gillar kavring, men inte för att jag heter Cavling.

Jag tänkte inleda mitt gästbloggande med något "allvarligt". Maria Sveland klagade nyligen i DN över hur manliga kulturskribenters 10-i-topp listor oftast innehöll manliga författare. Att man valde favoriter efter om de hade en "kuk" eller inte.

Ok. Jag kan inte svara för alla andra mediecelebriteter, men visst, min egen lista innehåller faktiskt bara män. Frågan är naturligtvis "varför". Är det för att jag ser kvinnor som "mindre värda"? Att jag tror att kvinnliga författare är "sämre"?

Knappast. I hela mitt liv har jag med EMFAS framfört åsikten att kvinnor är viktiga både i samhället och litteraturen. Faktum är att bara tanken på att jag anser Dostojevskij en viktigare författare än Camilla Läckberg är på grund av att Dostojevskij har "kuk" känns mycket märklig.

Menar Maria Sveland att om någon lyckades operera bort Dostojevskijs könsorgan och sy fast det mellan benen Camilla Läckberg så skulle plötsligt jag och en massa andra manliga kulturskribenter tycka att, OJ vilken viktig text ISPRINSESSAN är, DEN förtjänar verkligen att ingå i världslitteraturens kanon.

Förlåt mig Maria, men den inställningen ser jag faktiskt som en personlig förolämpning!

Just off the plane from Munich I stagger into a café to tell you ALL about the Studio Total tour of the European advertising world.

I don't know how but it seemed like our reputation had proceeded us. At some places we where bombarded with questions and @ others where treated like stars. Expensive hotels and lavish dinners where offered and we accepted like the sulten barnyard-babies we deep-down are.

In four days we met the best, biggest and brightest among Europes agencies. Betc, Grey and Reflex in Paris Grabarz & Partner, JWT, Jung von Matt, DDB Tribal, Preuss und Preuss and Scholz & Friends in Germany not to mention Mother in London.

Finally we got some really heavy offers, wich we will try to consider as objectively as possible (we have fans that won't forgive us if we don't do the right thing. Ok, ok we IMAGINE we have fans that won't forgive us if we don't do the right thing, but you know, for us megalomaniacs the difference is only semantics)

Sisters Academy

Nä kära Viggo. Ibland kallar jag mig också Apan från Panshirdalen. Men jag HETER inte så. Som jag sagt i både magasinet Filter och SVD senast i höstas så har jag ett annat efternamn. (Mazetti är min mammas namn).

Ok, egentligen har vi typ 30 stycken, men Resumé har inte hittat alla våra bolag. Varför betalar vi inte i tid? För att vi HATAR EKONOMI. Vi gör vårt bästa, men vi SUGER och jag personligen har ADHD och kommer att fortsätta slarva.

Är detta verkligen en seriös anklagelse? I så fall: vi har inte bojkottat er bar. En gång mejlade Viggo och frågade om vi ville prata på baren i Malmö och jag svarade att det kunde jag göra om Viggo gjorde intervjun kroppsmålad som spindelmannen. Det var ett skämt Viggo! Jag vill, i verkligheten, absolut INTE se dig kroppsmålad som Spindelmannen.

I två månader har två personer jobbat på detta. Kom igen! Vill ni ha skandaler? På festen i fredags kissade lilla Lovis i mina kupade händer. Jag har i radio bett alla varumärken som börjar på bokstaven G att dra åt helvete. Jag bodde i flera år i ockuperade hus och livnärde mig på att snatta.

Är det bra uppförande av en som vill ha ansvar för globala varumärken?

Ganska många företag inte tycker det.

Sen finns det en del företag som inte bryr sig så länge vi tjänar pengar åt dem och till slut finns det ni som älskar oss för dem vi är. Till er: vi älskar er också. Så att vi nästan går sönder.

Avslutningsvis tänker Studio Total att bränna upp och ge bort våra pengar. Vi tänker bryta mot ALLA regler och spendera lördagskvällarna med händerna fulla av Lovis urin. I alla fall så länge alternativet är Resumé Bar.

* PS. Viggo frågade också om annat. Som om det är sant att jag har försökt begå självmord. Kanske det Viggo, men det är saker som jag inte har nån lust att debattera med en man som samma dag som 300 personer DOG av kriget i Afganistan förklarade att svenska valets viktigaste fråga var avskaffandet av Reklamskatten.

Snu

Var i Uppsala för att träffa kyrkan (Studio Total jobbar lite åt dem). Promenerade genom snön och befann mig plötsligt på gamla kyrkogården. Mindes och bestämde mig för att försöka hitta Frödings grav.
Hade inte med mig något så jag pissade ett kors. Kändes som en hyllning både åt kyrkan och skalden.
